We had 3 days training in Taupo and this was the photo of me under water. I had been invited to spring camp with others who are training to do Ironman. The picture is of a large whale trying to swim, but is actually me in an under water video.

Haven't written much lately, but really haven't felt like I've been achieving much. Except for things which don't bear close scrutiny, such as eating the entire contents of a very large box of chocolates all by myself over the space of a week. I blame the fact that the whanau has been away for the school holidays, this has deactivated the 'set a good example' form of dietary control which I tend to rely on quite heavily. Closely related is the "who ate all my chocolates" phenomenon, also quite useful for minimising dietary excess and also absent in recent times. The forestry behind Maraetai being open again after the long dry summer has meant that when I have run I have been able to get out on the bush trails I love. I realise though as I slow to a walk to go up hills I used to at least attempt to run, that I am still a bit short on fitness, not sure if that is physical or mental though. Karen writes: How we started triathlon - Special K

A very long time ago, someone suggested that the Diabetes Projects Trust put a team in for the 2005 Special K women's entry level triathlon held in Auckland . This was touted as being the biggest event of it's kind in the Southern Hemisphere. The Special K brand disappeared from the triathlon scene shortly afterwards (there have been other incarnations), but it is I am sure an amazing memory for many women in New Zealand. I still see the t’shirt around occasionally, obviously being worn for sentimental reasons by people who would appear to have come a long way on their personal endurance journeys from that original event. For me, it was the first organised event I had participated in in more than 20 years, and certainly my first ever triathlon effort. I think it was around a 300m swim, a 10km bikeride, and a 3km run along the Auckland city waterfront. I was overweight, desperately unfit, and as the working mother of an 18 month old...

Ironman number 9

Anyone else find that they think in song lyrics? When I read the title above, it brings to mind a particular vintage song, something of an earworm. It's the same out on the bike or running, I see something that reminds me of a song, or worse, hear one, and it's hours at the particular tempo of whatever bit of music. Anyway, taper has just started for Ironman number (engine...engine...number ...) nine, and I'm quite pleased with this year's progress. I've got a complicated spreadsheet which tells me that I've done more running in the last 9 weeks, more swimming, and almost as much cycling as my best training effort in the past. Knowing that should make me less anxious that I'm ready, however I'm also aware that I'm heavier than ever, older than ever, and taper-mania has nothing to do with being rational or reasonable, I'm surely going to catch something horrible, injure something unfixably, or just generally find some creative way to sabotag...
